The Hillenbrand house has been busy, busy, busy, getting ready for the arrival of our Lil Emory Shae. From painting rooms to hanging curtains we are checking items off our list everyday. One of the BIG projects was transitioning Ansel (aka Bubba, Buster, Bubs, Baby, Sweet Boy) into his new "Big Boy" Bed. We read and prayed and prepared for the "right time"...but this little guy just rolled with the punches. He LOVES his bed and went right to sleep the very first night. The video below is the first morning waking up in his new bed. He is just too cute!!!

Mimi & Papa come to visit

Our little guy seems to get cuter everyday. His little personality really has a cracking up. He loves to tease and laugh. He is very patient with others. He isn't walking yet, but pulls up on everything. He is saying about 25 words, which include Momma, Dadda, and Kitty of course. He loves books and still cannot sleep without his Bear.

Januray 16th, 2011 was a special day for our family. Uncle Nate and Aunt Casie were in town from California and we thought it would be the perfect day to have Ansel dedicated. We know that raising a child in the way he should go can be a joyous but somewhat overwhelming task. We know we cannot do it alone. It will take those in Ansel's life who we know and trust to pour into this little guys life. We are grateful to the friends and family who have already partnered with us in this exciting journey. At NewSong we ask those people to stand with us in agreement, the father then prays over his son, and Pastor Jordan then dedicates and prays.

At the end of October Ansel and I took some time off to visit my family in California. This was our first trip just the two of us....and boy did we have fun!!!

Here we are getting ready to leave Daddy in Nashville. Ansel's clearly unhappy and I am trying to mask my anxiety with a cheesy smile.

If you follow my blog then you know my sweet friend Kelli Trontell is an INCREDIBLY talented photographer. Coming to Nashville to make it big in music, she had no idea God had another plan. Photography started as a hobby for her...shooting friends and family. But once word {and pics} got out everyone was talking about how gifted this girl was. She is now living in Montana, partnering with her hubby on a new adventure. These two have ideas, creativity, and talent coming out of their pores. And we are so excited to see what God has in store for them in the Northwest.

Dinner Time

Well, maybe not dinner....but this is a little trick I've been using when it comes to the time I need to prep dinner. Inevitably this time typically falls on the time of day this little guy has had enough but isn't quite ready for bed. So, I have started sticking him in the sink while I make the family meal for the evening. And it's working!! He loves it. And suddenly he's transformed from a very fussy baby to the cutest little boy I have ever laid eyes on.

July's Happenins

Is it just me or did July disappear before our eyes??? It was a fun month watching our little boy discovering all kinds of new things....from foods to playtime there was something new everyday.

I had to throw this pic in....the last week in July our AC went out at the house and we stayed at Paul's parents. All SIX of us!!! This is our little Tiger watching the birdies outside their window.
Thank you Grammy and Grandpa Marling for my 6 month bday presents....I LOVE them!!!

We also joined Auntie Rachel on a trip to Atlanta to pick up her niece and nephew from the Atlanta airport. It was a fun day and Ansel did awesome!!

In July Ansel also got really good at sitting up which meant he could take a big boy bath. He loves being able to splash in the water and play with his rubber ducky.

Off to bed...With Ansel teething he is putting EVERYTHING in his mouth or at least tries....including Daddy's face.

Ansel is loving eating solids.....July was a buffet of new foods. Some that weren't a big hit were peas, avocado, and green beans. Some that he loved apples, carrots, peaches, sweet potatoes, bananas, oatmeal, and rice cereal. Already taking after Daddy.

Becoming a Big Boy

Our little boy is growing up. I can officially say he really isn't much of a baby anymore. This is a fun new season. Everyday he learns something new. He is sitting up on his own, eating solids, analyzes and determines how to get a toy that is just out of reach. He doesn't even like to be rocked to sleep any more. I swear there are days he looks at me like, "I'm a big boy now, Mommy." Here are a few pics and videos of these sweet milestones.

In May Ansel took his first flight to California. We had a wonderful time visiting with family and friends. We were also there for my brothers wedding. It was a beautiful day and we were so honored to be there to witness such a sacred moment. If you would like to watch a few clips from the wedding you can do that here.

Today is a special day. It's Father's Day. Paul's first Father's Day!! We have been been incredibly blessed by the fathers the Lord gave us. Both love the Lord and are committed to being the best Godly example of His love to their families. Paul is following in their footsteps. An AMAZING Dad!! Ansel is surrounded today by fathers who love him well. And one day he will know his Heavenly Father, who will love him perfectly.

I cannot believe how quickly time is flying. Next week our little bubba is going to be four months. How did that happen? Now I know what parents mean when they say, "They grow up so quickly." On this day four years ago I married the man of my dreams....well at the time he wasn't the man of my DREAMS. But thankfully I have a Heavenly Father whose idea of the "perfect" partner was far better than mine. And it didn't take me long before I knew, what I had dreamt up about whoever I would marry, was completely off....I will confess I knew by date two that Paul was the unexpected winner of my heart. Who would have thought this straight laced, , good to the core, southern gentleman /pastor, would whisk me off onto the adventure of my life. He is my hero, my knight in shining armor, my prince. I married him four years ago today and I haven't looked back. Each day holds something new and I look forward to many many years to come.

In October we had our amazingly talented, sweet-as-can-be, and not to mention GORGEOUS friend Kelli take photos for our 2009 Christmas cards. Her and her husband are dear friends to us, we are blessed to have them in our lives. Kelli simply took up photography for fun but as you can see here she was born for this!!
We were lucky to have my mom in town that weekend, so we brought both Grandma's and Grandpa John to capture this special time. Enjoy.

We are ready and waiting with great anticipation for the arrival of our little David Ansel. We have the nursery done, with some minor decorating accents to complete later next year. We LOVE how the wall decal turned out, it was designed by a local artist, you can view his incredible work here.

This Christmas our hearts are filled to the brim. We just cannot believe how blessed our lives are and to think we have our greatest blessing on the way. We are in awe of our awesome Lord and His love for His children. We celebrate the gift He gave us, Jesus Christ. Through Him we are so abundantly blessed.

Newest Addition

Tiger, was our unexpected, undesired, addition to our family this year. He came into our lives as a three week old stray, covered in fleas and dirt. Paul and I had promised each other, we would NOT keep him. The plan was to nurse him back to health, get him eating solid food, and vaccinated....then he would be adoptable. Well, you know how the story goes. This little guy purred right into our hearts and he has found his permanent home at the Hillenbrands.

He was just a little ball of fuzz when we found him, so tiny. He LOVES to play!!

Much bigger now, snuggling with Buttons. They play, fight, clean each other, and snuggle. Sometimes it seems like they were long lost siblings.

Georgie, our grumpy old man. He isn't real thrilled about Tiger. We tease that Georgie is Mr. Wilson and Tiger is Dennis the Mennis. That pretty much sums up their relationship.

I have broken down and purchased my first pair of maternity pants. It was really difficult for me to give in. What was my hesitation, you ask? Oh I don't know, was it the high waist or the elastic that was more...ummmm unsexy!! I told hubby that after wearing these we would never make babies again. I was afraid the image would be seared in his mind forever. To confirm my fears these are the words that came out of his mouth the first day I wore them,

"When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun."

Never seeing Nacho Libre, I had no idea what he was talking about but I knew it had to be bad. Thank you google for providing this image from the movie so we all can be enlightened.
Needless to say, it's bad, it's unattractive, but oh so comfortable. I LOVE my maternity pants. I even went out and bought maternity jeans. I don't know what it is about that thick elastic waist band that feels so amazing. I may never go back!!

It's Finally Arrived!!

For many years now I imagined that my pregnancy would consist of swollen ankles, frumpy maternity clothes, and of course a massive belly right out of the gate. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that my body is taking quite well to growing a life, thank you Mom and Grammy for wonderful baby making genes.

First trimester was a breeze compared to what some of my girlfriends have been and are going through. Many compliments from coworkers and friends about my "glow" have been sweet words of affirmation. But one thing that kept coming up from person to person was the fact I wasn't "showing". At first I was a little proud of it, someone who has struggled to keep my weight down for most of my adult life suddenly to hear "you should have a tummy but you don't" was music to my ears. But then that motherly instinct kicked in...you know that one that says you should be worried. So, I started getting worried about it. "Why wasn't I showing? Was the baby growing properly? Was I eating enough? Was I eating right?" Although my Doctor continued to assure me I really didn't need to gain much or even show until week 20, it was a nagging feeling in the back of my mind.

Fast forward to Week 17 (this week) and I can finally say, "It has arrived!! I have a baby bump!" I first noticed while I was at the movies, sitting there thinking "Good grief do I need to unbutton my pants they are so tight?" When I got home that night waiting until hubby was busy in the other room to assess the situation and sure enough, there it was a little bump. And only to confirm what I thought I was seeing, the next night, Paul says "Can I tell you something and you promise you won't get upset? I think you have a bump." {smile}

Needless to say, something that would have many months ago mortified me to see (a gut) has now brought reassurance and an increased excitement for what is taking place inside my body.

Precious Moments

By now we are sure most of you have heard the exciting news, that we will be having a baby this year. We feel so blessed to be entrusted with the role of parent and are enjoying the journey of preparation to that special day (December 29th). In these first months we have enjoyed so many precious moments that will make for wonderful stories to share with this little life some day. Today we wanted to share with you one of those very special moments for us.

John and Jan (Paul's parents) were born to be grandparents. Not just to their biological grandbabies but they are grandparents to many lucky children. Whether they be neighbors, family friends, or church friends. Many children have already been blessed to have Grandma Jan and Grandpa John in their lives. So, to announce to them our exciting news was very special.

Jan and Paul threw a combined birthday party for John (60 yrs.) and myself (30 yrs). We had decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to bring the surprise of all surprises. And here was there reaction.....now how precious is that?!!!

On April 25th Paul and I completed our first half marathon. From the first training day to the finish line we were learning more about ourselves, one another, and God. What a tremendous experience!!

Saturday was a lazy day. We just relaxed and watched movies in the morning. In the afternoon we decided to take a drive out to Opry Mills Mall. We were having a grand ole' time. Laughing and enjoying the day...until we got an ALARMING phone call....

Uncle Paul called to tell us there was a TORNADO headed our way and we must stay in the mall until it passed. Eek!!

Our shock and fear only lasted a few moments and then we were on to more shopping and giggling...Julia loving the Banjo music.
Doesn't country look good on her?? She was fixing to get that there hat.

Day 6 - Eliesha & Julia Visit TN

Sunday, we spent the day at John and Jan's house (Paul's parents). Jan of course prepared an amazing Southern lunch.
After lunch the games began. Uncle Paul and Julia played bowling, tennis, and golf on Wii.

Later that night, someone is really excited about Nachos....
Before Julia got here, she told me over the phone that she would rather be with me in Tennessee then in Spokane eating Ice Cream. WOW!! Now that is love!! So, Uncle Paul and I thought it was very important to have the freezer stocked with her favorite ice cream...that way she could have both!!

The last morning to snuggle with Buttons...Cherished Friend of 26 years. I sure wish we lived closer together....but treasuring the precious times we do have together. I think Uncle Paul took the cake in Julia's opinion....not that it was a competition {cough} but Uncle Paul was definately the favorite.
Sooo going to miss this face and giggle.Julia is proving that it is IMPOSSIBLE to frown when you have a ktty in your arms...Packed and ready to head to the airport (she looks awfully happy)...Eliesha your friendship is a gift to me. Only God could have known how much I would need you you in my life. Thank you for your friendship. And Julia is the cherry on top....love you both so much! Thank you for coming to visit, we sure are going to miss you!!

In every family there is a heritage that is passed from one generation to the next. For many it is given in a monetary amount. For a few the most treasured heritage that can be passed on is that of character.

The heritage of character, like money can be squandered in a single generation. But if it is valued and cared for with the utmost respect it will become long standing for generations to come.

I am privileged to say that I have received a great gift from family, the Marlings. My Grandpa Marling was a man of great character. He was a story teller and in those stories were nuggets of character being passed on to each generation, three to be exact. I see my Dad, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins now carrying these gifts. Ready to impart to the generations to come.

Running Again....this time with Courage!

Paul and I have started running again with the 1VoiceRunners, training for the (half) Music City Marathon in April.

Last year when we started running it was right around the same time that I started the ASI program at Newsong. I cannot tell you the overwhelming insecurities that came with running and training for ministry. I felt completely unfit to do either one. With great faith, accountability in friends, and sweaty palms, I went for it. Uncomfortable, yes!! Challenging, definitely!! Good days and bad days, absolutely!! But I did it and I can look back and see all that the Lord grew in me in just a short amount of time.

So, here I am starting our second term of classes, and running...again. And I feel more confident this time. I am running again....but this time it isn't away from physical health and the call on my life. I am courageously running forward in great anticipation of all that the Lord has for me physically and spiritually this year.

Acts 4:13 says,

"When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."

Peter and John?? Unschooled and Ordinary?? We are talking about two disciples who were on the inner circle....they were the closest friends of Jesus. PETER, who Jesus said, "I will build my church on." And JOHN, "the disciple whom Jesus loved." These men were seen by the crowd as unschooled and ordinary. BUT, because they exuded great courage, the crowd knew they had to have been with Jesus.

In this season, I will run with courage. When I feel (or am) unschooled and ordinary I will take courage in the Lord. And the crowds will gasp and say, "how did such an ordinary woman accomplish this? She must be with Jesus!"

Well the holiday's are over and we are well into 2009. I (Alison) have started classes which include, Systematic Theology II, Life and Letters of Paul, and a communications class. I am very excited about what I am taking and look forward to diving in head first all over again. Paul is working hard at CHS and very excited about what the Lord has for him this year as well.

This time last year I (Alison) was with some of my most favorite people on this earth....my childhood girlfriends and their families. Eliesha (friends since 4 yrs.), Melissa & Melanie (since 4th grade), and Stacey (since Jr. High)...ALL of my childhood memories revolve around these women in one way or another. We have laughed our way through EVERYTHING!! The awkward styles of the 80's and 90's, new boyfriends, heartbreak, newer boyfriends, more heartbreak, vacations, new schools, summer camp, new homes, lost pets, sibling rivalry, youth group, mistakes, achievements, you name it we've seen it together. Not to mention their families, truly being my family. I love these people and feel so blessed to still have them in my life.

A Grateful Heart

"You will give more than you ever have, on the least you have ever had."

Those are the words I (Alison) heard God speak to me over the summer. We had just committed to my going part time at work and entering into the ASI program at Newsong. Me being the "number cruncher" was starting to panic on how we were going to survive a year on a limited income. We knew in our hearts that this was the right decision and through our obedience we would be provided for (as always). But, to hear the words above did not make my heart skip with delight. I think my dialogue with God went something like this...

"What the...? Your joking right? How can we give more when we have less? There are things that I need and can't afford already, how can this work?"

{Silence}

He had spoken and that was that. So, we trust and know that somehow, someway He is going to make a way for us to give more than we ever have on the least we have ever had. {Gulp}

Fast forward four months....and He has been faithful. Paul and I are blessed beyond words. We have not felt the "pinch" of less income....even in giving away so much of it. I can't get my head around how God's economy works but as we have given more and more (and it has be sooo fun) we have been provided for beyond what we could have produced on our own.

As we are entering into this season and I don't just mean the Holidays. But, this season in America of home foreclosures, the markets record low, job losses, and the list goes on....a challenge has been given to us at Newsong. A challenge that I also give you now...

"This season, give up your luxuries so that others may have their necessities."

The hair stood up on the back of my neck when I heard those words. Suddenly, the thought of a Christmas snowboarding in Lake Tahoe didn't seem so exciting, in fact it seemed a little frivolous. We have had this trip planned with my family for almost a year now and I have been looking forward to sitting on the top of the Sierra Mountains enjoying the view of beautiful Lake Tahoe. I have day dreamed about teaching Paul how to snowboard and drinking hot coco on the lodge deck. Now, I am hearing a little voice speak to my heart about where that money should really go....

Paul and I watched "Schindler's List" the other night. What a great movie and I was just a kid the last time I saw it. But one of the scenes, and you know the one I am talking about. The war has ended, Mr. Schindler is getting ready to flee and the Jews are presenting him with a ring of gratitude and he breaks down and says "Why did I keep the car? That is ten more people. Or my pin? Why didn't I sell my pin. This one more person." Oh how those words have been replaying in my head. Making me ask "What luxuries am I holding onto that would provide the necessities for someone else?"

And THAT is the very question we are asking the Lord. And I know He will be faithful to show us.

We would like to hear from you. Where has God shown Himself strong on your behalf? When have you not understood how but put your trust in Him and He moved a mountain for you? Where has God gone exceedingly beyond what you had expected or hoped for?

Also, how is this season going to be different for you and your family? Are you recognizing luxuries in your life that need to be given away?

Last Christmas Paul and I adopted our first pet, Buttons. A cute little calico kitty. She has brought so much joy into our home...she was the perfect "introductory" cat for Paul. : 0 )

Early this summer we felt like it was time to find a buddy for Buttons. I have to admit seeing Georgie at the Williamson County Animal Control was love at first sight. He is a little shy but a precious big brother to Buttons. They have such a sweet little relationship. So funny to watch them together...they play, fight, clean each other, and snuggle.

When Paul and I felt the Lord telling us it was time to move to Nashville so many things were running through my mind. How would we tell my family and friends? Would they understand? Would they support us even if they didn't understand? How could I communicate the heartache I felt at the thought of leaving them, but also explain the peace I felt in walking in obedience?

I will be completely honest, the move to Nashville was the hardest and greatest thing I have ever done. I miss my family and friends. Those people who have seen me grow into the woman I am today. They have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. They have laughed, cried, and celebrated with me. They created wonderful memories with me, that I will cherish for a lifetime. So, leaving them was the hardest thing God has ever asked me to do and I miss them greatly.

But, He has been so faithful to bring family and friendships into my life here in Nashville. Not to replace the old but to add to those who are walking alongside me on this journey. These friendships have been so rich and intimate, hard to believe I have known them for less than two years.

JT and Christy Hughes are one of those friendships. I remember the Sunday that I felt that nudge from God, "You and Paul need to get with them." I smile now thinking about how God already knew how we would need one another, and was beginning to orchastrate this special friendship. They have been faithful friendships to Paul and I. Friends that we love dearly and look forward to our future with them.

Last weekend we had an opportunity to spend the weekend in Chattanooga with them. Chattanooga is a fun place to visit. They have attractions for everyone's taste from an incredible aquarium, the Bluff View Art District, a Mystery Dinner Theater, the infamous Ruby Falls, and much much more. Our weekend didn't consist of too much site seeing. We went for relaxation and conversation. Anyway, here are a few snapshots from the day.

Last weekend Paul and I joined his parents in Knoxville for the UT vs. Mississippi State football game. I love going to these games....brings back fond memories of Washington State football when I was younger. A not so great team, bundling up for a cold night, band music, and losing your voice from cheering. Here are a few snapshots from the weekend....and random thoughts from me (Alison).

Today Paul and I headed to Soddy-Daisy Tennessee for his cousin, Matt's wedding. Yes, that's right Soddy-Daisy (say it with a southern accent...it will bring a smile to your face).

The drive was beautiful with so many red, yellow, and orange trees. The bride couldn't have picked a better day, the weather was perfect!!

Yesterday, as our group was running, someone made an interesting comment. He was talking about the city that we live in, Franklin, TN. His observation was that running had revealed to him the character of the people in our city. They are nice, friendly people. In fact just as we started yesterday, every car allowed us to run through an intersection without horns honking or angry expressions on their faces.

This got me to thinking about my responses, that reveal my character. In the same way that running has revealed how friendly Franklin is, my responses to every situation in my life will reveal what I believe to be true.

We can only act according to what we believe. It does not matter how many times I tell someone what I believe, the true test is how I act. How do I respond when I receive bad service at a restaurant? It can reveal that I still believe I have a right to be served. How do I respond when I receive a pat on the back? It can reveal a need to be praised.

Each and every moment in my life is an opportunity to discover what I really believe. It will also reveal what does not line up with what is true. Sometimes this revelation is not very nice. It is uncomfortable, and can be disappointing. Other times I can clearly see how I am becoming, "a new creation in Christ Jesus."

My desire, is to see what I say matched by how I live.

Paul and I have been training for a half marathon, with a group of people from Newsong. It has been an incredible time of building friendships, learning from those who are more experienced, as well as praying for and encouraging one another. Paul and I have learned so much physically and spiritually in these last two months.

Although our marathon isn't until October, many of us decided to run the 30th Annual Franklin Classic (10k). The procede from this race benefit the Mercy Children's Clinic a non-profit, pediatric healthcare ministry based in Franklin, Tennessee.

To each of us she had a different name.
To six, Mom.
To others wife, sister, & neighbor.

To me she was Grammy.

When I think of her, words flood my mind. Words like gentle, patient, nurturing, cook, beautiful, saint, unconditional love, and strength.

She saw many things in her life. Some wonderful and some difficult. She lived a full life. Full because at every step in her journey she carried a deep love for the Lord in her heart and honor & reverence for Him on her lips. She understood her desperate need for Him and lived her life that way. Today Grammy would be 92, but today she celebrates her life with the One who gave her life.

I am grateful to Grammy for the demonstrative life she lived for me. But, today I am even more grateful to know that she is a part of MY cloud of witnesses. The ones cheering me on from Heaven. And as I step into this new role the Lord has for me as Student, Intern, and Pastor's Wife, I think of her crying and smiling and laughing (she has a great laugh). Boy, do I want to make her proud. So, Grammy this one's for you!
